Krnica Valley

hike

This is actually a great one day trip for everyone, if you feel having lunch in heart of the Triglav National Park and to taste some great traditional Slovenian food. It is an easy access to the pure nature. Drive towards Kranjska Gora in direction Vršič Pass mountain road. After the first few turns, you'll notice lot of cars parked just by the road, and if you're lucky enough you will find a parking space. Then just follow the sign to Krnica Valley. Begin your trip by walking down the forest path, crossing the river Pišnica and just few steps later, you'll enter into beautiful mountain surrounding - Krnica valley. We find this valley the most beautiful in the winter time when all the mountains around are covered with snow and lodge in the middle of the grass-field feels like a fairy-tale cottage.

Walking through the mountain meadows, you will also pass the area - Kekčeva dežela - where the first Slovenian movie was filmed. Then just follow the marked road towards Koča v Krnici (»Krnica Cottage«). After 20 min of walk along the river bed, you will arrive to Koča v Krnici where you can have some fine traditional Slovenian lunch. But before you enter the cottage it is worth to go just around the corner, where you can enjoy some great views towards the Vršič Pass and explore one of the greatest rockfall in this valley (left photo). In the spring and summer time this is also the entry point towards mountain Škrlatica, the second highest mountain in Slovenia.

How to layer your look

In winter time this area is very cold. River Pišnica brings a lot of humidity into the air, so the feel of the cold is even higher. By getting dressed for this trip we suggest to pay close attention on layering. For the first layer we suggest a warm underwear, made from Poliamid and Merino wool. Avoid cotton shirts which will get wet during the activity, and because of the cold, there can be risk of catching illness. Use some warm mid-layer and choose a Primaloft jacket, combined with the Gelanots hard-outershell. Don't forget the warm gloves! Hands will freeze here very quickly. Follow the buttons to check our recommendations for a perfect winter outfit.
